Envy is one of the matters mentioned in the Holy Qur’an and can have a serious impact on a person’s life. Envy within marriage can greatly affect the temperament of both spouses and their relationship as a whole.
It can lead to alienation between spouses and frequent arguments. In this article, we will explain the signs of envy and its effects on marriage, as well as how to protect yourself from it.
Signs of Envy in Marriage:
The relationship between husband and wife is always under the watchful eyes of others, and many people envy even the simplest things, such as mutual understanding or the beauty of one or both spouses…
Allah Almighty says in His Book: {Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty} (Surat An-Nisa’).
There are signs that appear on spouses indicating they have been affected by envy. The most prominent signs of envy in marriage include:
- After the marriage had been going smoothly and peacefully, sudden and unjustified outbursts of anger and excessive jealousy begin to occur over trivial matters.
- A constant feeling of heaviness on the chest, difficulty breathing normally, and persistent headaches without any medical cause.
- A sense of sadness pervading the home, feelings of depression, and a lack of appetite.
- Frequent conflicts between the spouses and alienation from each other, even when the reasons are insignificant, as well as avoiding spending time at home.
- Deterioration of their financial situation and the appearance of financial problems, with increased spending on strange and unnecessary things.
- Envy can also manifest physically, with one spouse experiencing fever, a significant rise in body temperature, tingling, or numbness in the limbs.
- Spouses affected by envy may feel lethargic, lazy, and sweat excessively, and boredom may prevent them from fulfilling their duties normally.
- Isolation and withdrawal from the world and from gatherings with family or friends.
- Suffering from physical and psychological ailments with no medical explanation.
Can Envy End or Prevent Marriage?
When a married person is afflicted by envy, problems between the spouses increase, and both may feel alienated or even develop feelings of dislike. They may avoid spending time at home or having conversations together.
This can sometimes lead to a dead end, where ending the marriage seems like the only solution for both parties. Envy can also prevent a person—whether a man or woman—from getting married in the first place, as they may avoid or reject the idea altogether.
Or, when it comes to meeting and getting to know a potential spouse, one may see the other in a negative light and seek to end the process.
Ways to Protect Your Marriage from Envy:
There are many ways to protect oneself from envy in general, and in marriage in particular. The most important include:
- Regularly reciting the morning and evening adhkar, and choosing to enter and leave the home in ways that avoid the harm of the envious.
- Performing the obligatory prayers on time and maintaining them, as well as sincerely supplicating to Allah and making frequent du‘a.
- Reciting the Qur’an regularly, especially Surat Al-Baqarah and the Mu‘awwidhat (the last three surahs).
- Frequently seeking forgiveness, glorifying Allah, and remembering Him to protect oneself from the devils among mankind and jinn.
- Performing ruqyah shar‘iyyah (Islamic spiritual healing) through trustworthy scholars and religious figures.
- Reciting Al-Fatiha, Al-Mu‘awwidhatayn, and Surat Al-Ikhlas over water and drinking it daily.
Supplications for Protection from Envy:
- {In the Name of Allah, with whose Name nothing in the earth or the heavens can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing} three times.
- {O Allah, bless him, and remove from him the heat, cold, and pain of the evil eye}.
- {I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous pest, and from every envious eye}.
- Regularly reciting the Mu‘awwidhat and Ayat Al-Kursi for protection from envy.
In conclusion, envy in marriage can have significant effects, but by regularly reciting the Qur’an and supplications, there is much good and protection for spouses. This is the best solution, far from separation or resorting to superstitions.
