Defining the Human Soul:
In its simplest sense, the soul is the force that gives humans life and movement within their bodies. However, for philosophers, it is the central pillar of their research and theories.
Each scholar has defined the soul from his own perspective. For example, Carl Jung saw the soul as a collection of contents, made up of both conscious and unconscious elements.
He also considered the development of the soul to be an individual process, while the researcher "Rogers" believed the soul is the person himself, his behavior, and his relationship with the surrounding world.
Meanwhile, Lewis described the soul as a person's sense of distinction and separation from others, which is achieved through complete self-awareness.
What Are the Aspects of the Human Soul?
The human soul is manifested in several ways, including the following:
The Physical Aspect:
This is reflected in how a person describes their physical attributes, such as saying, "I am tall, my eyes are hazel, my hair is short," and so on.
Social Role:
Here, the soul is seen in its relationships with others and its role in society, encompassing an understanding of each person's self and what is expected of them in various fields.
Personal Traits of the Human Soul
This refers to describing the soul's personal characteristics, such as defining oneself as generous, emotional, anxious, impulsive, and so forth.
Abstract Description:
This means stripping the soul of everything and focusing solely on the essence of being human or a living being, and other similar expressions that fall under the term "human."
Functions of the Human Soul:
The soul is considered the main source of life in a person, responsible for nourishment, growth, reproduction, and sensory perception. Below, we review the functions of the human soul:
Mental Perception
Mental perception enables a person to comprehend abstract concepts, such as equality, rights, justice, as well as goodness and duty.
Through mental perception, one can also understand general sciences like physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, and many others.
Mental Will
Mental will is also known as conscience. Here, the soul can distinguish between truth and falsehood, good and evil. The conscience controls the instincts present within the human soul.
What Are the Types of the Soul in Islam?
The Holy Qur'an and Islamic teachings clarify the educational and social foundations aimed at refining the soul and working towards its purification.
The Qur'an also refers to a simple and clear classification of the human soul, free from complexity, as follows:
The Commanding Soul (an-nafs al-ammārah)
This is the soul that urges its owner to do evil, commit wrongs, and perpetrate injustices. In this state, the control of reason and conscience is diminished, and the soul is driven by emotions and instincts, causing harm to oneself and others.
The Self-Reproaching Soul (an-nafs al-lawwāmah)
This soul strives to struggle against its desires and anger, as well as committing sins. If it does commit a wrongdoing or evil, its conscience quickly awakens to the act it has done.
It then expresses regret and repentance, blaming itself for the sin it committed.
The Tranquil Soul (an-nafs al-muṭmaʾinnah)
This is the soul that is content and pleased, having achieved victory of reason and conscience over evil and sin. The struggle ends, and the soul finds peace by following the commands of reason and the path of truth and goodness.
This leads it to feel content with its Creator, and its Creator, in turn, is pleased with it, bestowing generosity and blessings upon it.
In conclusion, we see that the reality of the human soul falls under several classifications, but they all come together under one name: human nature, which lies between reason and perception, instinct and desire.
